The Residences at Hardwoods of Morganton

First constructed in 1939 as a tri-plex townhouse building, the structure at 108 East Catawba Street serves as an example of forward-thinking architecture in a small, North Carolina town.

In 1957, Hardwoods of Morganton (HOM) was established and assumed the space where they quickly prospered, as a wholesale lumber broker. At the time, Morganton's primary industry and employers consisted of high-end furniture manufacturers such as Drexel Heritage and Henredon. HOM, operated as an intermediary, facilitating the sale of timber and finished lumber between growers, sawmills, lumber yards and furniture manufacturers.

“Pass-throughs” were created between the three units, allowing employees to occupy the entire space and move freely between them without going in and out through the front doors. An addition was added in the mid-1960s.

The structure was returned to residential use in 2023.
